The PAO's Flight Plan

The PAO's Flight Plan is a basis strategy for Civil Air Patrol Public Affairs Officers (PAO's) to follow in achieving the purposes of the CAP Public Affairs Program. The Flight Plan is distilled from CAP Regulation 190-1 and Public Affairs best practices from units across the nation. PAO's in North Central Region are expected to use the Flight Plan as the basis for their Unit Public Affairs Plans.

Watch this site soon for resource links to help you accomplish each part of the Flight Plan.

The components of the PAO's Flight Plan are:

News Releases Unit Newsletter Web Site Community Outreach
PAO's are expected to submit at least 2 press releases/news stories (about their unit or people in their unit) to internal (CAP Online News, NCR News, Wing Newsletter/Website) and external media (newspapers, magazines, TV and radio). PAO's are expected to produce a newsletter for their unit. Ideally this should be published monthly but that decision is left to the PAO and Commander.

The format, delivery method and distribution are up to the PAO and Commander.

Each unit is expected to develop and maintain a current unit website. This site should be hosted on the cap.gov domain or on the wing's domain.

Content should tell the unit's story and not duplicate content created by higher headquarters.

Unit newsletters and news releases should also be posted to the website.

Each unit should conduct a major outreach event each year to let the local community know about the unit and services the unit provides the community.

Units are encouraged to hold events such as open houses, color guard events, parade participation, speakers bureaus and similar activities.
